This e-portfolio starts with my novice to graduate portfolio which was part of my capstone subject at Flinders University in 2018. It highlights my post-graduate journey into my Master degree as well as moving from graduate to proficient in 2021. I have chosen to keep all of this available as it shows my career progression and my growth both professionally and personally. The certificates and documents section is password protected; please contact me if you would like access to it.
I am Nikita Mickan, South Australian secondary school Humanities and English teacher and a Teacher-Librarian. I graduated in 2018 from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Education (Middle and Secondary Schooling)/Bachelor of Arts; majoring in Legal Studies and English. I have also graduated from Charles Sturt University with a Master of Education (Teacher Librarianship) in 2021.
I am currently employed at Mark Oliphant College in the northern suburbs of Adelaide as a permanent English and Humanities teacher, having been at this site since 2021. I was converted to permanency at the end of 2022. Prior to this I have held short and long term contracts at Mark Oliphant College and Parafield Gardens High School as well as undertaking temporary relief teaching at Avenues College, Para Hills High School and Parafield Gardens High School. I have also been employed, originally as a "Christmas casual" and later being converted to a part-time contract, at Big W Tea Tree Plaza in a variety of roles (2012 - 2020) and as a casual employee at Gulfview Heights Primary School Out of School Hours Care as a level 4.1 Qualified Worker (2019-2022). These positions have allowed me to grow professionally and personally.
I believe that teachers have the most special role in a young person's life. Teachers, in my experience, can offer some of the most valuable advice that the young person can be given. Teaching is a humbling and rewarding vocation that offer many benefits to the teacher, including and not limited to: that 'aha!' moment students have when that concept that they were tackling with finally clicks; when a student that has been struggling comes in and they've reached a good place; when students succeed in what they wanted to. That is what makes teaching a rewarding experience.
I have created some resources available for teacher use which can be found at the links below:
