4.2 Manage classroom activities
With my Year 8’s, I ran a narrative unit early on in the year in order to get an understanding of where they are in terms of their writing. I scaffolded the formative work and stepped them though the narrative structure in one aspect at a time. This allowed all students to be able to learn about the structure and gradually add other parts of the structure in to make it more complex. Structuring the formative work in this manner, allowed students to be able to make connections in their writing in their own way. This gave students the agency to be able to manage their own writing and have the freedom to choose the storyline. I utilised pictures as prompts rather than using written story prompts because I didn’t want to direct the student’s narratives.

4.3 Manage challenging behaviour
At the beginning of the year, I have discussed with all of my classes about what the behaviour expectations within the classes were. This meant that there are common expectations and that everyone knew what was acceptable and what was not. This included teacher and student expectations and this was added into the Google Classroom where all students could see it. This has been referred to in discussion with students about behaviour and their conduct within the class; which has been extremely useful as it allows students to understand how their behaviour affects other students and myself.

4.4 Maintain student safety
I always ensure that I have current Provide First Aid in Education and Care Setting certificate for emergencies as well as for camps and excursions. This, I consider to be a staple in any teacher’s arsenal as we have many different students in our classes which could require assistance. I have also completed Youth Mental Health First Aid, which has allowed me to greater support students during mental or emotional distress. I have many students with wellbeing needs and this has abled me to understand them a lot more than what I would be able to otherwise. It has also given me more tools to be able to approach or assist them with what they confide in me.
I am also a Fire Warden for my building and as such, I have booked in to complete Fire Warden Training in Term 4 of 2021. This, I am looking forward to, as it means that I can assist during an on-site emergency and is easily transferable to any site I work at.
